Green Center
Adkins Arboretum is in the process of becoming a MAEOE Green Center.
The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) created its Green Centers program in 2003 to support their successful Maryland Green Schools program created in 1999.
The Green Schools program emphasizes achievements and progress schools make toward environmental sustainability while aligning with the curriculum and Maryland Environmental Literacy standards and graduation requirements.
Green Centers support their communities and Green Schools by:
- Modeling sustainable practices
- Providing excellent learning opportunities to their visitors
- Offering professional development for teachers
- Preserving natural resources, especially of the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed
- Partnering with schools to complete their Maryland Green Schools application
- Supporting environmental literacy in K-12 students
