Art at Adkins

Yarnstorming

On Show: March 2–April 6

Reception: March 2, 2–4 pm

Yarnstorming is a form of public art that employs the use of yarn and fiber, instead of paint or chalk.

Adkins Arboretum's Yarnstorming exhibit invites fiber artists, or teams of artists, to wrap dormant trees in colorful fiber creations. Trees will be judged and prizes will be awarded in several categories.

Sponsored in partnership with the Fiber Arts Center of the Eastern Shore (FACES), the Yarnstorming exhibit will be on show for Arboretum visitors to enjoy in the weeks just before the first buds of Spring appear.

A reception for the exhibit will take place on March 2 at the Visitor's Center. Artists and the general public are invited to attend this free event.

How to Participate

Yarnstorming participants must register at the Visitor's Center. While on-site, they will choose the tree they wish to decorate. Participants may choose to take photographs and measurements of their trees to help plan their designs.

Artists should follow these guidelines when planning their design:

  • For the health of our trees and wildlife, refrain from using glitter, wire, mesh, plastics, nails, or tacks.
  • All work must be safely reachable by an 8' ladder.
  • Installations should be in trees only and should not extend to surrounding shrubs.
  • Yarn art may be installed on specific days: TBD
